I’m Mare (rhymes with bear) and I’m a second year OB/GYN resident in beautiful Charleston SC. Welcome to my humble blog!

For my first post I figured I could explain where the name “Sass & Scalpels” came from. Several years ago, I was having what I thought was an intelligent, if heated, debate with a classmate about who knows what. When it was over with, he told me that I should try to “tone down the attitude” or risk being perceived as a b*tch. Excuse me, what? He then went on to tell me that I shouldn’t be so “emotional”.

Uuum, okay…

While I was angered by his comments, I was not all that surprised. I had already noticed by then that what was seen in women as “too much emotion” was described in men as “passion”. So, I chose to disregard his opinion and continue to be as emotional as I wanted about the things I cared about. And many years and sleepless cram sessions later, I’ve made it as a doctor and surgeon like I wanted. So to that guy, IN YO FACE. {Don’t worry I’m much more mature than this at work lol.}

Anyways, I hope that through my musings as I navigate residency, life, and balancing my budget while buying expensive shoes, I am able to help you all with your journeys whether they are in the medical field or not. And if I can answer any specific questions about med school, residency, women’s health, etc. along the way… well that’s just a bonus!

I’ll end this post with this fitting quote from Madonna:

“I’m tough, I’m ambitious and I know exactly what I want. If that makes me a b*tch… okay.”
